Previous Shows

December 7 - Jeff Porter

Jeff was born in Virginia Beach, but grew up on the corner of Old Stage and Vandora Springs Roads in Garner and is a graduate of Garner Senior High where he was the drum major for the Mighty Trojan Marching Band for two years. Jeff is former lead singer and guitarist for the Bubba Hyde Band and always has a surprise or two in store when he comes by. “Bubba” music reigns when Jeff’s in the house -- and he usually brings along a side kick or two

November 2 - Don Smith

Don Smith was born in Burlington, NC in 1950 and has spent all of his 56+ years in the South, 52 of them in the Tar Heel State. He came to playing an instrument later in life, not buying his first guitar until he was 28.&Don has been performing publicly since mid-2001 with the trio of Emerson, Smith & Phelps. In late 2004, he also began playing solo at coffee houses across the Triangle and has appeared at a number of venues in Raleigh, Durham, Apex and Clayton. He draws his material from old public domain tunes, from traditional American artists such as The Carter Family and Woody Guthrie, and from more recent folk singer-songwriters such as Tom Paxton and Norman Blake. An evening with Don is a sort of trip through America's rich folk/traditional music history. Performing on 6- and 12-string guitars, mandolin and tenor banjo, he sings of train wrecks and ships lost at sea ... of hobos, outlaws and orphans ... of lost love ... of what it is to see the coal mine shut down or the entire year's crop lost to drought. But before you grab the "crying towel", you should know that he also sings of what it's like to suddenly realize that you've become your own grandfather ... or that tonight's main course for dinner has just appeared in your headlights ... or that your name is William Morgan, but your wife spends money as if it was J P Morgan instead! Some of his songs will make you laugh; others might make you cry. But nearly all of them have a story to tell, and Don has a story to tell about most of them as well. By the time you leave his show, you'll have been not only entertained, but also educated and enlightened about some parts of American history that you might not have known when you arrived.

October 5 - Tracy Jane Comer

Tracy Jane Comer (nee Tracy Jane Rowe) was born in Wilmington and spent her childhood there and also at Wrightsville and Kure Beaches. She attended junior high and high school in Garner, and later lived in Greenville and Chapel Hill. As a tip of the hat to her N.C. roots, one highlight of the new CD is the track “Yellow Bike,” a charming and poignant childhood sketch of the year she lived at Kure Beach. Tracy is a four-time nominee by the Madison Area Music Awards: Best Acoustic Album for her debut CD, Second Wind (2004) and for her current CD, Quietly There (2005), plus Best Acoustic Artist in 2004 for her solo work and in 2005 as part of Sticky Fingers trio. September 7 - Hickory Grove Quartet

The Hickory Grove Quartet began singing together in the early 1990’s. Since that time, the Hickory Grove Quartet has been singing across North Carolina in a variety of venues. The quartet is devoted to “home missions”---singing and leading in worship, with a focus on senior citizen functions, rest homes, and those in prison. The group supports Compassion, a Christian child sponsorship organization that provides aid and educational opportunities for children in poverty. In 2004 the Hickory Grove Quartet released its first recording titled “Men On A Mission. The group is making plans to extend its ministry through future mission trips. Sandy Stephenson, one o the group, is our Lori Jordan’s cousin.
